CAIA Association: Cryptocurrencies and Digital Assets - Market Structure, Risks, and Opportunities

In this presentation, Keith will discuss the digital asset and cryptocurrency markets and the innovative solution to build a global, decentralized, and secure network that facilitates payments and other transactions. Keith will explore how proof-of-work, such as Bitcoin mining, and proof-of-stake protocols, such as Binance, are used to secure networks and complete transactions. Behind many of these currencies are real businesses, such as projects built on top of Ethereum smart contracts that facilitate borrowing and lending as well as options and futures trading. Stable coins pegged to USD or EUR can earn yields of up to 7% with minimal volatility. Returns and volatility data will be presented, as well as evidence on how digital assets can add return to a diversified portfolio without adding to portfolio volatility. Risks of digital assets will also be discussed, including regulatory risks, technology risk, and valuation risk.

Artificial Intelligence in Finance: Data Ethics and Beyond

The investment and potential use cases for artificial intelligence and machine learning (A.I/M.L) in financial services are increasing exponentially as the use of cloud technology and volume of data makes its application more viable. As digitization now reaches the last confines of finance, it has opened the door to the automation of most routine functions.

Processes that require complex analysis and decision-making broadly mark the boundary for digitization, yet it is being pushed by artificial intelligence applications which offer significant advantages over human intervention: ability to integrate vast – and growing – swathes of data, auditability, predictability, and availability, to name a few. As the recent release of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Guidance on the Ethical Development and Use of artificial intelligence highlights important steps that firms in Hong Kong must take to ensure that this new technology is implemented in a fair, accountable manner.

In this event we will address some of the key challenges, including the ethical considerations, talent and expertise requirements, and technical considerations; we will also hear about real-life applications from those who are striving to implement true artificial intelligence.

Topics

  • Guidelines and ethics on use and sharing of personal data
  • Challenges with talent acquisition/development regarding the use of AI
  • Challenges with using AI to manage data ethically
  • Challenges with the development of technology for the use of AI

Remarks:

  • This will be a hybrid event, with virtual and in-person attendance.
  • The in-person attendees will enjoy a networking session and breakfast at the American Club in Central.
  • In-person spots are limited, please rsvp to secure your spot (we do not accept walk-ins for in-person attendance).

Green Bond Tokenization - Exploring the art of the possible through combining blockchain, smart contracts, internet-of-things, and digital assets

Join us on 2 November at 5pm HK time for a virtual discussion and demo about green bond tokenization.

Quality information on socioeconomic activities is key for guiding the allocation of scarce resources and designing sound government policies to sustain economic growth and improve human livelihoods. Researchers from various fields have attempted to use novel sources of passively collected data to overcome these challenges and improve the quality of economic measures. This talk will introduce the development of alternative data sources in the measurement of economic activities and how they influence the financial markets and corporate decision making.
