Hong Kong Fintech Week to spotlight Fintech advances in HongKong, virtual banks and FintechHK Global Competition Finals
Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) today (14 October) announced details about the fourth annualHong Kong Fintech Week (4-8 November), during which Greater Bay Area collaboration will come to the fore with a cross-border Shenzhen day.The main event will spotlight some of the game-changing Fintech developments in Hong Kong during the past 12 months with an eye on what’s in the pipeline ahead.
The Hong Kong Fintech Week, presented by InvestHK and organised by FINNOVASIA, is moving to a new venue this year. The first two days (4-5 November) will comprise Fintech innovation lab visits and education day events at multiple locations around Hong Kong. The main conference-cum-exhibition will take place on Wednesday and Thursday (6-7 November) at AsiaWorld-Expo, with the final day (Friday 8 November) taking place at multiple locations in Shenzhen.
The new venue will allow for a greater variety of programmes, business events, exhibitors and attendees. The event is expected to attract thousands of industry leaders from over 60 economies and 200 industry experts as speakers, including Fintech entrepreneurs, investors, regulators, and academics, along with more than 100 Fintech exhibitors and 8 delegations.
“The event this year is set to be the best yet, thanks largely to Hong Kong seeing a string of very major Fintech developments during the past 12 months that are transforming the financial services sector,” said Stephen Phillips, Director-General of Investment Promotion at InvestHK. “As well, we have a new venue close to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, a feat of engineering which in many ways symbolises the connectivity within the Greater Bay Area – and that’s one of our key themes. In every sense, Hong Kong is proving to be Asia’s global centre of Fintech.”
Among the highlights will be the final stage of the FintechHK Global Competition, co-organised by InvestHK and Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund. This is the culmination of a competition that started earlier in the year, taking place across six different locations in North America, Europe and Asia. The worldwide finalists will gather and pitch for USD 500,000 or more investment commitment from Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund and renowned local angel investors during the Hong Kong Fintech Week.
Other big themes of this year’s event include the latest Fintech developments in Hong Kong and the new entrants to the city’s financial services industry. These include virtual banks, digital insurers and those driving the development of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, big data and blockchain.
Virtual banking and digital insurance, along with the financial inclusion they bring, will feature heavily during the week, particularly as many have new services poised for launch. At the same time, other big development for the financial services sector, open APIs for banking and trade finance, will also draw much attention. In addition, regtech, suptech and cybersecurity will also feature heavily, alongside wealthtech and digital payments.
Keynote speakers and panellists will include C-suite executives and leaders from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, , the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong, the Insurance Authority, as well as the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. We are also delighted to have invited 10 global Fintech unicorns, along with numerous household-name companies that are heavily involved in Fintech. Delegations come from Mainland China, the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Israel, New Zealand, Japan and Luxembourg will also join us at the event.
The Head of Fintech at InvestHK, King Leung, said: “We have a packed agenda for the week, full of global leaders and experts from some of the most exciting companies around the world. The event will showcase Hong Kong’s unique advantages as a launchpad for regional and global expansion for mainland Chinese Fintech companies, as well as a great platform for overseas Fintech companies to enter the Greater Bay Area and the rest of mainland China through Hong Kong. It makes the city a perfect location for Fintech startups.”
Founder and CEO of FINNOVASIA Anthony Sar said: "The cross-border element of last year’s Hong Kong Fintech Week proved to be very popular. We had a tremendous response, so we will reprise it this year with a more business-oriented approach and a richer programme.”
